During the trip out of the swamps, Zafir pulls Nightingale aside. He explains how close he was with Echo, that she was the only person he ever loved. He explains that he will held Nightingale responsible for her death forever.
Nightingale tries to explain herself, but Zafir doesn’t care. He insists that the instant she shows any sign of letting the Maluma take control, he’ll enjoy killing her, no matter what it costs him.
Her friends reassure Nightingale that Echo’s death wasn’t her fault, but she doesn’t believe them.
