Padric and Suri keep watch over the others while they rest. Suri is curious about what motivates Padric to work so hard for these strangers, since he lacks the strong connections the others have.
Padric explains that he’s there because of love. Nor for any of them, but for another that he used to adventure with. He warns her of the pain caused by loving someone that he can’t have, that it can consume anyone who can’t learn to live with it.
Suri is defensive about his accusations, insisting unconvincingly that her interest in Rook is purely academic.
