UM1 Chapter 4 Spark Notes

UM1 Chapter 4 Spark Notes

A Confused Survivor
  • Once Zafir and the Anointed are gone, Ursy emerges from the shadows, wanting to know why they were fighting. In her mind, the Anointed saved her, and they helped save her too, so they should be on the same size.
  • Nightingale and Remi do their best to explain that they can’t stay together. Ursy is troubled, then offers her own help to make up for what’s missing. She has nature magic and that should be able to help with their adventure. She doesn’t have a tribe anymore, so she doesn’t have any reason not to stay with them.
  • ! Reward: Ursy Companion
A Curious Room
  • Justice is losing steam, worried about the members of the Anointed and the fact that they haven’t encountered anyone else yet despite traveling so far. Zeke reassures her that they’re bound to find them eventually, they just have to keep looking. They have to be down here somewhere.
  • Damocles calls them over, revealing the entrance to a massive chamber that proves to be their destination. It holds numerous strange arcane objects, preserved from the jungle’s rot thanks to the great depth.
  • Justice warns them not to touch anything, as she investigates an ancient tome held in protective glass. She seems excited with the secrets it contains, and hopes to be able to take it back to translate it fully on the surface.
  • While she’s reading, Damocles ignores her advice and tampers with one of the artifacts, releasing a gigantic tree-monster from within which immediately attacks them.
  • Justice is unwilling to run, and tries to get past it to the tome, forcing Zeke and Damocles to fight their way after her.

A Distant Sound
  • Though he did his best to keep awake and protect Remi, Rook eventually fell asleep.
  • Fortunately Padric was there to pick up the slack, and he’s been watching over them along with Gaige for several hours now. But something moves in the dark, enough to finally attract his attention. He wakes Rook, warning of the attack to come. They have only moments to prepare.
A Gehenna Morning
  • After surviving the confrontation with Alana, the group joins the Anointed in their old camp. Instead of resting right away, Nightingale meets with Zafir and justice to discuss what has happened.
  • Justice retells her experiences searching Hyde and eventually locating the piece of the Pontifex, as well as the death of her previous companions. Zafir assures her that she made the right choice looking for it, and that none of those who died were her fault.
  • After some discussion, Justice explains that she now understands what the Pontifex actually does. It’s a key, able to seal and unseal esper of all kinds. A supernatural skeleton key.
  • The injured members of the group are finally able to receive magical treatment, recovering from their wounds.
  • ! Special: All party members are no longer injured
  • The next morning, the whole group meets with Zafir again, and Rook asks about the purpose of the Anointed. Zafir explains that the Annointed were formed to oppose a godlike being called Charon, who they now know is attempting to escape using the power of the Pontifex. There seems to be more to their motivations, but Zafir refuses to explain, instead demanding answers about their own motives for helping Justice.
  • Before they can tell him the truth, the Maluma reveals itself to Nightingale, warning her frankly that Zafir is one of its old enemies, and if he learns it has infested her, then Zafir will stop at nothing to get it out, even if that means killing her. She stops Rook from telling Zafir about it just in time. Instead she tells Zafir that she’s the princess, and lies about her civic duty.
  • Once he’s gone, Nightingale explains what the Maluma told her. Rook seems doubtful that Zafir would turn on her after she saved his life. Nightingale leaves to find Justice and ask her how he’ll react.
  • Justice confirms that the Maluma was telling the truth, and that Zafir has killed its previous hosts. She seems confident that she’ll be able to make sure this time goes better so long as she makes the case. Nightingale and Zeke are frustrated with her, but she promises to make the case for Nightingale that night.

A Happy Survivor
  • After the battle is over, Ursy emerges from hiding and is ecstatic to see the group and the Anointed will be joining forces.
  • Zaphir is happy to have her along, and he assures her that she won’t be expected to fight.
  • Ursy argues that she’s not helpless, and she promises to use her magic to help.
  • Reward: Ursy Companion
A Horrific Sight
  • Nightingale is emotionally destroyed after seeing the Maluma attack and kill someone, and she collapses uselessly to the ground.
  • Zafir rages at her, insisting that he could’ve saved Echo. Nightingale is obviously overcome by the Maluma and needs to die.
  • Before he can attack, a strange appears in the cavern, apparently after following the group there. It’s Shayliss Arsen, Nightingale’s older sister. She insists that Nightingale did nothing wrong, and was just defending herself.
  • Zafir takes the surviving Anointed and leaves the cave, enraged that Nightingale won’t be punished.

A Painful End
  • Nightingale tries desperately to escape, crawling away from Alana. For a moment Alana makes her think that she might escape. But she’s just playing with her food—eventually she’s tired of waiting, and lets her Wurm devour her.
  • Nightingale is conscious long enough to feel the Maluma’s pleasure at acquiring a much more powerful host before she’s killed.
A Panicked Run
  • Zeke, Justice, and Damocles are unable to fight the gatekeeper, despite their best efforts. Zeke and Justice do their best to hold her off, getting the crap beaten out of them in the process.
  • Damocles eventually discovers a hidden exit, and they sprint desperately to get away, locking the door behind them with Justice’s magic and running for their lives.
  • Zeke is upset that they didn’t retreat as soon as the Gatekeeper appears, but it’s too late to flee now. The only way open to them is forward.
A Promise in Death
  • Zafir finally falls after the other Anointed are killed. In his last moments, he clutches to Nightingale’s arms, proclaiming that Elenia is doomed and that they’ll all die. He reminds Nightingale of her promise, begging her to save Echo.

A Safer Place
  • Together with the Anointed, the group finally defeats Alana. They kill the wurm, severing each of its remaining heads. Eventually Alana is on the ground, crawling away from them. She taunts Nightingale, arguing that she has no right to judge. All Alana wanted was immortality, something that Nightingale already had.
  • The Maluma tries to pressure Nightingale into killing her. But before she can give in, Rook intervenes, insisting that Alana is going to die anyway. She isn’t worth it.
  • Alana dies on the ground in front of them. Nightingale does her best to comfort Ursy about the loss of her tribe.
  • ! New Flag: Last of her Coterie
A Scared Survivor
  • Usry is horrified by the slaughter she saw. She felt loyal towards the Anointed, and seeing them murdered has made her flee and hide in a remote corner of the camp.
  • Remi finds her, and does her best to reassure her. She comforts the Nymph, explaining that she doesn’t understand either, but they didn’t have another choice. And she doesn’t have to worry about being harmed in their companion.
  • ! Reward: Ursy Companion

A Sign of Echo
  • Nightingale finds Zafir going between the tents of the dead members of the Anointed, gathering a single possession from each one to give to their families. They have a brief conversation, and he reiterates the importance of their mission.
  • During their converseation, the Maluma appears, telling Nightingale it can help them track down Echo’s esper. She gets some distance from him, then asks it to explain.
  • The Maluma demands her body to find Echo, and she refuses. Before things can get desperate, Damocles is able to find Echo’s trail, and the group finally sets off.
  • ! Flag Check: Experienced Guide
A Soul Enslaved
  • Zafir leads the way into the cave, determined to be the one to confront Echo.
  • Sure enough, she’s waiting for them. She begs him to flee, and for the group to retreat, insisting that she won’t be able to stop Charon when he makes her fight.
  • Zafir refuses, insisting that they need the Pontifex piece back, and can’t leave without it. They delay long enough that the Soul Stitcher finally arrives, jerking Echo into motion. If they want the Pontifex Piece, they’ll have to take it by force.
A Strange Encounter
  • After searching Gehenna for some time, the group eventually comes upon the Great Library, a massive overgrown structure slowly crumbling away. As they reach the entrance, they encounter a figure emerging from inside, and they can tell she isn’t human.
  • The figure turns out to be peaceful, introducing herself as Lakshimi the Gatekeeper. She is a traveling merchant, and she’s eager to trade.
  • She warns the group to avoid her sisters, because they’re unlikely to be peaceful.
A Tiring Meeting
  • The group flees into the swamps until they’re sure they aren’t being followed. Conditions are terrible and dangerous and they’re all exhausted by the time they find somewhere safe to catch their breath.
  • Nightingale is furious with herself, though Rook seems cautiously willing to believe what Zafir said about the Maluma’s goals. Maybe it really is trying to free an evil god, and they could be playing into its desires.
  • Nightingale argues that she isn’t a slave to its commands. It does talk to her and try to manipulate her, but she’s still in control.
  • Suri appears, urging the group to retreat from the swamps and gather allies. They ignore her, instead deciding to rest for a bit until the Anointed are asleep, then try to sneak into camp to rescue their friends.
  • ! Flag Check: Experienced Guide
All My Friends Are Dead
  • The fight to recover the seeds goes badly, and they’re all destroyed.
  • Ursy seems unwilling to go on, viewing herself as having failed completely. Nightingale assures her that Breeze wouldn’t want her to give up, and she reluctantly agrees. Breeze follows them back to the city, silent the whole way back.
Ambush Failed
  • The group defeats a large number of dangerous wildlife that has built nests in the ruins.
  • The Maluma is showing Nightingale strange visions while within the ruins, and Remi tells her that she should ignore them.
An Old Friend
  • Shayliss is shocked to find the group, and even more surprised to find Padric is with them of all places. She demands to know what he’s doing there, and why he didn’t send Nightingale back to Elenia.
  • Padric explains that he met up with her in Rhamsted, and he could tell she would need help, so he decided to come along.
  • Nightingale asks how Shayliss was able to find them, and Shayliss explains that she sent a crew to help in Hyde, but when they’d arrived they discovered Nightingale and her friends had already been there. She’d been following them ever since.
An Opportune Tip
  • Nightingale is relieved to reunite with her sister, and they share a tearful embrace.
  • The group wants to know how she was able to find them, and Shayliss explains that she has been tracking them ever since Nightingale left Elenia. They figure out that she met Padric, though he isn’t traveling with her anymore.
At Least We Fell Together
  • Everyone except Nightingale plummets down the trap. There’s a chute at the end, so no one is killed in the fall. Even so, Remi breaks one of her wings. Rook volunteers to carry her.
  • Suri appears, warning everyone that she can feel traps placed in the ruins, which shouldn’t be there. Someone has made changes to the city since it was abandoned.
  • Justice is worried about the fate of the Anointed, and rallies everyone to find them.
  • ! Special: Remi is injured.
  • ! Special: Nightingale is
  • ! Special: Rook is
Black Ticket Redemption
  • Before Alana can kill her, a dozen Black Hand agents appear from the shadows with crossbows and magic. They unleash everything they have against Alana, tearing her apart in seconds.
  • When the smoke clears, their leader helps Remi from the rubble, and informs them that their debt has been repaid. They take back the black ticket, burning it before their eyes.
  • Zafir wants to know who they are, and Remi explains a little of what happened in Rhamsted. Considering their results, Zafir is thrilled they arrived in time.
  • Special: Remove Black Ticket
Cages
  • Nightingale wakes bruised and bloody, discovering that she’s trapped inside a cage. She isn’t alone though: the members of the Anointed they’ve been looking for are all around her. A man introduces himself as Zafir, and explains how futile their escape attempts have been. Breeze is trapped too, along with the only surviving Nymph, Ursy.
  • The Maluma instantly recognizes Zafir, and stops waiting passively for Nightingale to be killed. It grants her new powers in order to cut through the bars and lead an escape. The Anointed see her do it, though considering how desperate the situation is they don’t press her for answers right then.
  • ! Reward: The Feasting Discipline
  • ! New Flag: Slipping +1
City in the Swamps
  • The group finally reaches Gehenna, an ancient stone city that has been completely overgrown by the swamp on all sides. Justice uses her tome to show everyone a picture of what it looked like before being abandoned, and the non-human population that lived there.
  • Justice meets Suri for the first time, who emerges to explain that her own species built the city long ago. At the same time, the group discovers that Suri and her kind are not immortal. Only humans don’t age.
  • The group reaches the center of the city, and encounter the Anointed camp. It has been completely abandoned, probably for several days. Justice explains that the Anointed are devoted to fighting a cabal of godlike beings called the Council of Abhorrence, which Suri doesn’t believe exist.
  • After a search, Rook discovers crude maps of the city leading to the library, which Justice believes Zafir must’ve written. The group decides to follow them, and hopefully find the Anointed.
Clumsy Withdrawal
  • The group discovers why Alana was such a threat to the Annointed as they’re beaten to a bloody pulp. The former Nymph discovers Justice, the reason they were able to bypass so many of her traps. She’s going to feed her to her Wurm first.
  • Before she can, Damocles distracts the beast long enough for them to escape down a side-passage, barring it behind them. Alana begins to break down the door in rage, before yelling something about an attack on her lair, and abandoning her attempt to kill them for the moment.
  • The group limps back to their camp in the library, discovering Nightingale is missing.
  • Rook wants to return to the ruins to find her, but is outvoted by everyone else. They’re barely standing after their fight, they need time to treat their wounds and recover from all the fighting. They can go get Nightingale once they’ve had a little time.
  • ! Flag Check: [[error in print, missing flag to check on page 275]]
Cracked Façade
  • They do their best against Echo, but she’s just too powerful. She doesn’t seem to care much about Nightingale and the rest of the group though, taking sadistic pleasure in killing the Anointed one at a time. This lets the group crawl away, though she’d probably come for them next if her slaughter continued.
  • Zafir begs her to stop, and finally manages to get her attention. For a few moments they meet in silence, and she seems to become lucid again for a moment. She explains that she’s been enslaved, that the Stitcher is in her mind, forcing her to do its will. She wants desperately to escape, but even when she dies it only brings her back.
  • Mention of the Pontifex attracts the Esper’s attention. Now that she’s taken the pontifex piece, it drags her away into the swamp, leaving them behind.
Crashing
  • Justice leads the group back towards the surface, frustrated at having to wait on the new information she’s gathered in the library.
  • Before they can use the exit, Alana arrives riding her Lich Wurm, blocking the exit. She informs them that they’ve fallen into her traps and now they’ll be food for her creature, mocking their attempts to stop her.
Dangerous Split
  • They don’t stay still for long. Zeke suggests that the group should split in half, with himself, Justice, and Damocles going down into the Gehenna library while Padric and Rook keep an eye on Remi.
  • Once everyone is convinced, Justice leads half the group away, down into the archives.
Deeper into the Library
  • After wandering for some time, the group comes to a dead end covered in strange symbols.
  • Zeke asks if Suri knows how to translate them, but she says it’s much too ancient and she can’t be of any help. She explains that Arkalla is a vast realm with many creatures, including her own kind the Antargatis Siren. They don’t know everything every other species ever built.
  • Justice remembers that another Arkallan creature, a Nixie named Bexley, was advising the Anointed. She decides to try her tome, and with it she activates the spell on the door.
  • It opens, revealing a dead member of the Anointed, Jakobe, who had been trapped there. Justice is upset she couldn’t be there to save him. The group collects his valuables and continues forward.
Don’t Fight, Just Run
  • The group is completely overwhelmed by the monsters that have infested the ruins. Eventually they’re forced to run for their lives. Padric carries Remi for a bit to allow Rook to cover their retreat.
  • Remi apologizes for causing them to fail, feeling that she’s the reason they’re unable to fight. Rook dismisses her fears, insisting that she shouldn’t feel guilty for being hurt.
  • Eventually they find a path forward, and proceed deeper into the library.
Echo From the Past
  • Meanwhile, Justice and Zeke have been beaten and restrained outside the Anointed camp. While Justice waits for Zafir’s judgement, she notices a figure approaching from the jungle. At first she hopes it might be their rescue, but the one who emerges is Echo, fully healed. She doesn’t alert the Anointed to her arrival, hoping that she might be willing to let them free.
  • Instead, Echo puts her knife to Justice’s neck, demanding that she tell her where the Pontifex piece has been taken. Justice refuses, and would be killed, except that Zeke starts throwing rocks. Before Echo can finish what she’s doing, the commotion rouses the Anointed, who rush in to see what’s going on.
  • Zafir is amazed to see Echo there, and is almost unwilling to believe she could even be alive. Echo begs him to give her the Pontifex piece and let her go, since she doesn’t want to hurt him. But Zafir refuses, insisting that keeping it from Charon is more important than anything.
  • Eventually her Esper arrives, forcing her to fight. Zafir is unwilling to lift his weapon against her, but the other Anointed rush to his defense.

Ending 4: Died a Killer
  • Nightingale is forced to watch as the Anointed kill her friends one at a time. When they’re dead, the Anointed throw Nightingale into another spell circle, and perform the same spell as before. This time Justice isn’t there to free her from it. She’s trapped beside her dead friends, to wait for the Great Bounty to find and kill her.
  • ! GAME OVER
Finding Justice
  • The group leaves the caves behind, catching Shayliss up on what they’ve been through in the meantime. They insist that they must save Justice, because of the piece of the Pontifex she has.
  • Shayliss explains just how difficult that task will be. If Justice is in the lair of a Shadow Lord, they’ll be up against a demigod of death, in a realm it controls. They are unlikely to survive the trip.
  • Shayliss has a map, and directs them out of the swamps, where they can catch an Airship to take them closer to the Shadow Lord, and Justice.

Footsteps and Bare Feet
  • Though the gatekeepers are dangerous enemies, Nightingale and the Anointed are able to overwhelm them. As the last is finally destroyed, the nymphs begin searching through the corpses for any sign of their tribe. Breeze and Ursy are on the edge of a breakdown.
  • Zafir urges them to make their escape now, or else be discovered by Alana and die too. Together they make their escape, limping free of Alana’s lair.
From the Shadows
  • Despite their boldness in judging against Zafir, the battle goes badly. The Anointed were much more powerful than the group thought, and they’re defeated. Nightingale is beaten onto the ground and is soon to be killed. She overhears Zafir ordering them to kill the rest of the group so Balthazar can’t discover who killed them.
  • Brea is slow to respond, and as Zafir turns to investigate, he’s blasted with dozens of crossbow bolts from the jungle. After just a few seconds, he falls dead.
  • The Black Hand emerge from the darkness, taking the Black Ticket they received and proclaiming the favor repaid.
  • ! Special: Remove Black Ticket

Fumbling Along
  • The ruins are badly infested, and what’s worse they’ve been filled with dangerous traps. The group is overwhelmed, and is beaten into a corner.
  • Rook is forced to put Remi down and fight desperately, clearing a path for the group to drag themselves out. They have no choice but to flee deeper into the library.
Gone Still
  • After a difficult battle, the group defeats Echo, and weakens the Esper enough that it is forced to flee.
  • She demands to know where Zafir is gone, and Nightingale tells her that he’s dead. This enrages her even more, and she seems likely to attack. Justice takes the Pontifex piece from Echo.
  • Damocles kills her, but doesn’t get to enjoy his revenge for long before the Stitcher returns and brings her back to life before their eyes. This attracts the Esper’s attention fully, and it attacks Justice, apparently swallowing her completely.
  • The Maluma appears to confront her, furious that the Pontifex piece has been destroyed. Echo informs them that Justice isn’t dead, but that the Stitcher transported her somewhere terrible, the lair of a Shadow Lord.
  • The Stitcher drags Echo out through the ceiling, and the group is unable to follow.
  • As they make to leave, another person arrives to confront them—Shayliss Arsen has found them.

Grimace
  • The fight against the Gatekeepers doesn’t go well for Nightingale, Breeze, and the other hostages. Wore, the Gatekeepers weren’t even trying to kill her, just slow her down.
  • She soon learns why, as Alana arrives riding her Wurm, rampaging through the room and rendering any escape attempt futile.
  • At the last moment, she ends up with the single surviving Nymph prisoner in her arms, Ursy. Breeze begs her to get the nymph to safety, before sacrificing herself to buy them enough time to escape.
  • Nightingale and the surviving Anointed run for their lives, not wasting her sacrifice.

Guidance
  • Padric leads the group along the trail. During the trip, he shares a somber conversation with Nightingale over the difficulties of responsibility.
  • Nightingale wants to know if Padric thinks she made the right choice about Zafir.
  • He assures her that Shayliss would be proud of her efforts, and that leadership is really about weathering things to the end.
Hope For a Future
  • After a difficult battle, Ursy eventually gathers up the seeds, packing them away in a safe, dry container for transport. She can’t stay to raise them, so she’s going to bring them along.
  • Ursy expresses her gratitude towards the group for helping her, proclaiming that Breeze knew how to pick good friends, and she would’ve been lost without them.
  • They leave together, with Ursy carefully sheltering the seeds from here on.
  • ! New Flag: Seeds of Her People
I’ll Repay You One Day
  • Alana and the wurm are eventually defeated, through a difficult battle with everyone working together. After the wurm is dead, Alana retreats, begging Breeze to let her live. This only enrages the Nymph, who uses her magic to finally finish her.
  • The others celibrate, but for Breeze and Ursy the victory is bittersweet. Before they retreat into the jungle, they give Nightingale a Homemade Brooch, which Breeze proclaims is a token meant to commemoriate her debt to Nightingale.
  • Reward: Homemade Brooch
I’ll Start With the Weakest
  • Alana and the Wurm are so powerful that even fighting together she can’t be beaten. Once they’ve all been beaten down so badly that they can’t fight, Alana discovers that one of her tribe is still there. She mocks Ursy, before feeding her to the Wurm.
  • Nightingale is forced to watch as Ursy is eaten alive. Alana turns on Justice next, but before she can kill her, Nightingale finds the energy to keep fighting, and tries to attack her again. But she doesn’t have the strength to put up much of a fight, and all she manages to do is make herself the monster’s next target.
  • Reward Check: Black Ticket
Independent Bravery
  • Breeze leads Nightingale directly to Alana’s lair, past the remains of many dead creatures. She laments the death of her tribe, which Alana has almost completely butchered by now. The Maluma warns Nightingale that the path they’re on is extremely dangerous, but Breeze insists that Alana will be out looking for her newly gathered prey, and while she’s doing that they can free anyone trapped in her lair.
  • Eventually they reach it, packed with cages of those Alana has trapped. But it isn’t unguarded; another hostile gatekeeper is waiting for them, and she attacks.
Is Everyone Alright?
  • The group falls down the trapdoor, landing roughly. Several party members suffer minor injuries, but Remi is hurt badly enough that she can’t walk. Rook says that he’ll be able to carry her.
  • Suri appears to warn everyone that there shouldn’t be traps in the library. Someone has been making changes, and they know the city well enough to be dangerous.
  • ! Special: Remi is injured.
  • ! Special: Nightingale is unselectable.
It Wasn’t That Long
  • The rest of the group returns to find that though Rook and Padric were able to defend Remi, Rook was seriously injured in the fighting and is now barely functional himself.
  • They learn what Justice, Zeke, and Damocles acomplsihed in the archives, and Justice reveals that she now understands the purpose of the Pontifex. They need to get back together with Nightingale right away.
  • ! Special: Rook is injured.
It’s Us or Him
  • Nightingale is convinced that killing Zafir is the right choice. The Maluma wants him alive so badly that it must be the optimal choice. If he stays, he’ll try to kill her, but if he leaves he’ll rally the Anointed to keep hunting them.
  • Zeke argues against it, insisting that Zafir is unarmed and there’s no way they can possibly kill him, then they’d be no better than he is. Justice agrees, insisting that Zafir doesn’t have to die.
  • But Nightingale passes judgement anyway. Even so, when she’s about to do it, she’s unable to swing her sword. Zafir can see this, and agrees to make the process easier on her in exchange for a favor. He asks her to save Echo. Nightingale agrees, and the battle begins.
  • ! Special: Justice is Unselectable.
  • ! Special: Nightingale must be part of the active group.
Let’s Get Out of Here!
  • Gehenna has become overrun with dangerous creatures, and they’re far too numerous for the group to defeat. They’re forced to flee for their lives, running wildly into the depths to get away.
  • Nightingale is overcome by the Maluma, which exposes her to powerful visions and prompts her to run from her friends.
  • Remi eventually catches up with her and comforts her. Even so, her mental state is fading fast.
Library of Gehenna
  • Together they get the library open, and Nightingale leads the way. She briefly struggles against the Maluma, which is manipulating her into seeing things that aren’t there.
  • Nightingale realizes that a small female figure she sees lurking in the corner is real, and she warns Nightingale to leave. Before she can ask for an explanation, the figure darts away.
  • The group discovers evidence that the Anointed passed through the library, and they set up camp for the evening in the same place.
  • While the others are getting things ready, Zeke discovers some valuable loot hanging from the ruins. It’s booby-trapped, and everyone but Nightingale vanishes down a trapdoor.

Lost Love
  • After a terrible battle, Zafir and the group defeat the Soul Stitcher, damaging it so badly that it is forced to retreat. Echo is injured as well, but not slain. She drops, and Zafir tries to help treat her.
  • Damocles confronts Zafir, insisting that the time has come to get justice for his mother’s murder. Zafir refuses to let him harm Echo, insisting that she’s only a victim, and Charon is the one to blame for her murder. After an argument, he eventually backs down.
  • Justice takes the Pontifex piece from Echo, insisting that it’s insurance against Zafir attacking them again.
  • The Maluma tries to force Nightingale to take the piece for herself, but she is able to resist. She realizes that splitting up the Pontifex means that the Maluma can’t win by just controlling her, and so she lets Justice take it.
  • Before they can even finish treating Echo, let alone interrogating her, the Soul Stitcher returns, appearing so abruptly that no one is able to react. It attacks, aiming for the group around Echo to reclaim its puppet.
  • Echo shoves Zafir out of the way, but Justice isn’t so lucky, and she vanishes into the creature. This was Echo’s plan all along, as she reveals that Justice has been sent away with the Pontifex piece to somewhere her master can’t get it.
  • Before the group can attack her, the Soul Stitcher realizes it has been tricked, and drags her away in fury, breaking several of her bones to get her out a narrow opening in the ceiling.
  • A newcomer appears at the cave entrance, apparently someone who followed the group just like they followed Echo. It’s Shayliss Arsen, Nightingale’s older sister.

Main Quest: A Dangerous Situation
  • After a day to recover, the group gathers together for dinner in the old camp. Justice makes her way over, trailing behind an agitated Zafir and the rest of the anointed. Zafir is furious with Nightingale, explaining that she’s lied about the Maluma.
  • The Maluma begs Nightingale to run right then, telling her that Zafir is going to try to kill her, but Nightingale refuses to listen to it.
  • Justice does her best to stick up for her, reminding Zafir that Nightingale put herself in danger to free the anointed, and that she’s obviously on their side.
  • Before the rest of the group can react, Zafir springs a trap around Nightingale, trapping her and the others inside a shield. He intends to leave them there until the Great Bounty arrives, to kill Nightingale and then destroy the Maluma for good.
  • Zafir apologizes for having to do it, believing Nightingale dead a long time ago, and everything that she’s done since the work of the Maluma trying to trick them.
  • After failing to convince him to let them go, Justice blasts the trap with her Theodotian magic, tearing it apart and freeing the group inside. She’s forced to flee into the jungle from the Anointed.
  • Zeke runs after her, while the rest of the group retreats another way.

Maybe We Can Pick the Lock
  • Though the group does their best to retrieve the missing key, the swamp’s monsters are just too much for them to overcome, and they’re forced to retreat back to Gehenna.
  • Remi apologizes, suggesting that they did their best.
  • Lakshmi thanks them for trying, suggesting that it’s more than most humans have ever done for her anyway. She’s fairly sure it wasn’t the key to her destiny anyway, but someone else’s.
  • As a reward for trying to help, she removes a cat’s collar from her stock, offering it to Remi for Gage.
  • ! Reward: Gage’s Collar
Meaningful Loss
  • The tree-monster is just too powerful to overcome, and Zeke is nearly killed by its attacks. Justice is knocked out before she can reach the tome. Zeke makes his way over, rousing her so that they can try to escape.
  • Justice resists, unwilling to leave without the book, and he has to drag her out rather than leave her to die.
  • Once they escape, Justice has a moment to recover, and apologizes for almost getting them killed. Though dejected over not collecting this new book of knowledge, she’s still confident she knows the purpose of the Pontifex, so maybe it wasn’t all for nothing.

  • Nightingale stands at the edge of the trapdoor, and nearly jumps in after her friends. But the Maluma persuades her that the fall is much too risky, and so she decides to wait for her friends to return.
  • She rests uneasily in the empty camp, until the library begins to shake itself apart. A strange nymph appears from the darkness, saying that something has triggered her trap. Nightingale demands the return of her friends, and the Nymph responds that she can die like them too.
  • Nightingale is about to fight her, when a massive monster tunnels from the ground behind the nymph, a terrifying predatory wurm. The Maluma tries to coax her into fighting it. She narrowly escapes being eaten alive, until another nymph appears to rescue her.
  • The friendly Nymph is called Breeze, and she reveals the Nymph trying to kill her friends is Alana, a former forest nymph who killed or captured all of Breeze’s former tribe. She believes she has done the same to Nightingale’s friends, capturing them for her mount to devour.
  • After some deliberation, they agree to work together to rescue whoever they can, and Breeze leads Nightingale down another path through Gehenna.
Not a Killer or a Fool
  • The Maluma is pleased to see that Nightingale is making the most sensible choice. Nightingale does not react well to this praise. Damocles is even more upset, and probably would’ve attacked if Rook didn’t hold him back. He thinks Zafir deserves to die just for letting Echo free.
  • Zafir thanks Nightingale for her mercy, and apologizes for suggesting that she didn’t have any of her willpower left. He makes to leave with Justice, but she refuses. She’s unwilling to come with him after the murders he’s committed.
  • Before leaving, Zafir requests that Nightingale do her best to save Echo. She’s in the same position, and deserves compassion. She agrees.

One Girl, Two Books
  • Though the fight was incredibly difficult, Zeke, Damocles, and Justice are able to overcome the tree-monster and recover the massive book.
  • Zeke is upset that they didn’t go back for help, but Justice insists they made the right choice. Her book is the entire reason the Anointed came to these ruins, and the knowledge inside might save Nightingale.

One Key for One Door
  • After fighting the Grotesque Effigy, the group returns to Lakshmi with the keys she was missing. Remi returns them proudly, asking if they’re the keys to her destiny.
  • Lakshmi inspects them, then says they’re Zeke’s. She buries the key, and removes an object hidden in her stash: an enchanted chalice. She says that it’s Zeke’s destiny, and she wouldn’t keep him from it.
  • As a reward for her help, she also gives Remi a cat’s collar, with Gage’s name already etched into it. Remi asks how she can possibly have it, but Lakshmi only shrugs.

Opportune Ambush
  • As they approach the location of camp, Padric climbs up high with a spyglass to see what’s going on. At first he can’t see anything useful in the camp itself, but eventually he can see Echo’s Esper rising above the trees.
  • They make their way in easily, since all the guards are now fighting Echo. By the time they arrive, the discover Echo easily holding her own against the Anointed. For a moment they seem unsure of what to do, but Padric insists they should help the Anointed. At least they can be reasoned with—they can decide what to do after Echo has been defeated.
Overwhelming
  • The group is overwhelmed by the infestation in the swamps, and is forced to retreat.
  • Nightingale is backed into a corner and is unable to escape—which is when Padric charges to her rescue. He’s able to fight a way clear for her, but is seriously injured in the fighting.
  • They carry him to safety, but he’s still much too weak to fight until he can receive real treatment.
  • Special: Padric is injured.
Patterns in the Dirt
  • The group takes stock after Zafir and the anointed are gone. Damocles is furious with Nightingale and seems like he might be abandoning them, but Nightingale calls him out and he apologizes reluctantly. He isn’t going to leave.
  • They need to find Echo, because she had the piece of the Pontifex that Zafir took. Nightingale asks the Maluma for help, and It agrees, in exchange for giving it control of her body during the search. She refuses.
  • Remi gets her attention, shouting that Gage has found tracks from where the Soul Stitcher dragged Echo through the swamp.
  • After gathering up their possessions, they set off after the tracks into the night.

Pontifex Begone
  • Echo is finally defeated, badly wounded and backed into a corner. Nightingale urges her to stop, but she drags herself alone, unable to keep fighting through conditions that would’ve killed a normal person.
  • The Anointed prepare to finally kill here, but Zafir refuses to do anything to stop her. He wants to know why she is fighting them, and why he hasn’t returned to her before now.
  • Before she can answer, the Soul Stitcher returns, a powerful esper that seals her wounds in a few moments before callously dragging her back through the jungle away from camp. She screams for help a second before she vanishes into the undergrowth.
  • Zafir tries to follow, but he’s not fast enough. The Soul Stitcher doesn’t actually care about hurting her, and so they quickly lose it in the night.
  • ! New Flag: Grievous Wounds
Pressing Through
  • The cave is infested with monsters, and the group is quickly overwhelmed. After fighting desperately onward anyway, Nightingale eventually discovers an opening to retreat and calls for them to follow.
  • They do so, escaping the monsters following them. But not before Zeke is injured in the retreat, impaling himself on a sharpened jungle plant. Rook carries him to safety, but the damage is done.
  • Special: Zeke is injured.
Reluctant Partnership
  • Nightingale decides that the best way to proceed is with Zafir on their side, and declares her ultimatum for him. They’re on the same side, they have the same enemies, and she demands that he help her get free of the Maluma.
  • Damocles is outraged by this alliance, and does everything he can to persuade them not to stay with Zafir. He insists that Zafir can’t be trusted, and even tries to attack him. Nightingale refuses his arguments, and eventually he settles for vowing to watch Zafir and search for disloyalty.
  • Zafir waits patiently for this display to be concluded, before introducing Nightingale to the surviving Anointed, Ezra and Brea.
  • After these introductions, Zafir confides in Nightingale, apologizing for attacking her and confessing that she is clearly still in control of herself. Even so, he says that he’ll be ready to kill her if the Maluma ever wins.

Retreating Wurm
  • The fight with Alana doesn’t go as well for her as she expects, as the group manages to beat her back, weakening her Wurm and nearly killing them both. She’s forced to retreat underground to avoid being killed.
  • The group tries to follow, but they’re not fast enough, and they can’t tunnel like the Wurm can. It tunnels away into the darkness, leaving them behind.
  • The group returns to the surface, finding Nightingale isn’t waiting for them at the camp.
  • Rook insits they go right back underground to find her, but no one else has enough energy for the task. He’s outvoted, as everyone else says they need to rest before they can go back down. They’re all wounded and exhausted from the fight, and getting themselves killed won’t help Nightingale.

Return of the Gatekeeper
  • Before Justice can explain more of what she’s learned, the alarm goes up in the Anointed camp.
  • It’s nothing dangerous, though. Instead, the friendly gatekeeper Lakshmi returns, explaining that she has acquired more of value and they seem like they want to trade.
Revenge for Echo
  • Nightingale wanders through the camp, past the corpses of the fallen members of the Anointed. She can’t help but feel guilt for killing Zafir, even though he was hardly kind to her. The Maluma appears, furious with her. Charon apparently wanted him, and by killing him the Maluma will be unable to appease its master.
  • Remi and Zeke try to reassure Nightingale, without much success. She finds the well and washes her face, but still feels bloody. Justice refuses to help them find Echo, who they still need to track down to get back the piece of the Pontifex she took from Zafir.
  • Nightingale tries to find her location by asking the Maluma, but it only laughs in her face.
  • Eventually Remi notices that Echo has left some tracks. If they hurry, they can follow her before she gets too far.
  • ! Special: Justice is no longer Unelectable.

Robed Figures
  • Nightingale and Breeze hurry towards Alana’s lair. Breeze shows Nightingale a key she collected from one of the gatekeepers they fought, which she hopes will be able to open the cages.
  • They break into the lair moments later, a vast space filled with cages and corpses. Breeze runs through it, searching for the other members of her tribe, and is horrified to learn that Alana ate them first.
  • There are other prisoners though, the Anointed, and they show Breeze a nymph they managed to hide from Alana, Ursy. As Breeze starts to open their cages, another Gatekeeper arrives to interrupt their jailbreak.
Rook the Rescuer
  • After desperate combat through the ruins of Gehenna, the group finally overcomes the worst of the monstrous infestation. Rook leads them through many dangerous traps, assuring Remi that she isn’t responsible for their difficulty.
  • Eventually the group discovers the path deeper into the library, and continues deeper.
Rook, the Best Piece on the Board
  • Though the fight was desperate, Rook and Suri are able to protect Remi through the night. Even so, Rook is seriously injured by the time the rest of the group arrives from their wandering in the archives.
  • Justice, Damocles, and Zeke are arguing over who is responsible for the disaster they encountered, and each one wants to take the blame. Even so, Justice explains that they were able to learn more about the purpose of the Pontifex, and she needs to pass that information to Nightingale right away.
  • ! Special: Rook is injured.
Safe Resting
  • Zeke expresses dissatisfaction with just waiting for Remi to recover, given they’re separated and Nightingale could be in danger. He suggests going with Justice and Damocles to find information about the Pontifex, while Rook protects Remi.
  • After a brief agreement, they agree, and Justice leads the way down towards the forbidden section.
Shayliss is Going to Kill Me
  • The group chats together during lunch. Damocles shows off his Iridium dagger, explaining its special properties.
  • Nightingale offers Padric an out to return to his inn, but he refuses. He says he wants to stay with the group because he’s sure they’re going to survive, and he doesn’t want to get in trouble for abandoning them.

Side Quest: Lakshmi the Gatekeeper
  • Remi approaches Rook, who has been watching Lakshmi trade with the Anointed. He explains that he’s trying to understand gatekeepers, and make sense of their motivations. Remi discourages him from pestering her, but Rook ignores her.
  • Rook formally introduces himself to the merchant, and asks why she’s collecting keys. They have a long conversation about how she’s hoping to find the way to open the door to her destiny. But Lakshmi is frustrated, since she lost a key she thinks is important somewhere in the swamp.
  • Rook volunteers to retrieve it for her, and gathers the others. It was only a tree that took it, after all. But Damocles, Nightingale, and Zeke know better. Even so, it’s too late to refuse, and so they set off.
Side Quest: My Collection is Huge!
  • Rook and Remi are cooling down after the fight with a few hands of Abraxis, when one of the Anointed notices they’re playing. He introduces himself as Ezra, and thanks them for the rescue. He brings over his own deck, sharing a rare card from Brahma. He promises to grant them a much better reward if they’re able to defeat it.
  • Rook and Remi seem confident they’ll be able to triumph easily, though ultimately the dice will decide.
Side Quest: The Lonely Girl
  • Flag Requirement: Last of Her Coterie
  • Nightingale discovers Ursy alone in a dark corner of the camp, obviously traumatized after what she suffered. She does her best to comfort the nymph, but Ursy is heartbroken beyond reason. In her mind, her entire world is gone, entire tribe slaughtered.
  • Nightingale learns that the Nymphs aren’t immortal, and rarely live beyond twenty years old. That’s why Alana became the monster she was in the first place, making a pact with her Wurm in order to extend her life.
  • Ursy explains that though Nymphs don’t live very long, they do contain a seed inside them, which can germinate into the next generation after their death. She’s heartbroken that those Alana consumed were destroyed, but then seems relieved when she realizes that there were others in her village who hadn’t been planted yet.
  • Nightingale volunteers the group to help out, and soon they set out into the jungle to recover and plant the seeds. They discover Usry’s old village, overgrown and destroyed. As Ursy begins searching for the seeds, monsters from the jungle are attracted by the noise.
Something’s Coming
  • Rook stays awake through the night, keeping watching over a resting Remi. After several hours alone, Gaige alerts him to the approach of dangerous creatures from the darkness.
  • At first it seems that he’s going to have to fight them alone, but Suri manifests to assist him, willing to risk the Great Bounty noticing her to keep Rook safe. They will have to fight together.
The Archives
  • Justice leads half of the group through Gehenna until she reaches a magically sealed door. She opens it using her magic, exposing the archives within. Though the books and artifacts within are in pristine condition, the archives have been converted into a monster’s den.
  • It’s filled with rotting corpses, and there’s a huge opening in the floor used by some burrowing creature. There are also three guardians watching over the archives, Gatekeepers who emerge from the shadows and attack.
The Ferry
  • The hike out of Gehenna takes several days, but eventually the group comes to a humble port town on the edge of a mountainous cliff.
  • Shayliss suggests this would be a good place to recuperate and restock before the difficult journey to come.
  • The group is ecstatic to finally be out of the swamps and to reach civilization, even if it’s a port of thieves and privateers.
The Stitcher
  • Together the group enters the cave, knowing that Echo must be inside. They wander for a little while, until they hear Echo’s voice leading them onward. They suspect a trap, but Echo doesn’t harm them, and they find her sitting alone in a lonely cavern.
  • Echo wants to know what happened to Zafir, but Nightingale refuses to say. She demands the Pontifex piece, which Echo refuses. She doesn’t want to hurt Echo for it, because of the promise she made Zafir. But she can’t leave without it.
  • After a brief argument, the Soul Stitcher arrives, and forced Echo to attack.
The Trail to Echo
  • Rook and Damocles lead the group along the trail, using their ample tracking experience to ensure that they don’t get lost.
  • After hiking all day, they eventually follow it to a cave. After preparing for a bit, they enter together, knowing Echo must be inside.
There’s No Justice Anymore
  • Though they fight bravely, Echo defeats the group. She insists this is why Zafir was the world’s only hope, that without him even Charon’s pawns can’t be defeated. She decides who to kill first, eventually settling on Justice.
  • Justice tries to resist, even futilely stabbing Echo, but the Soul Stitcher just heals the wound. Echo conjures a strange portal through her Esper, opening into a dark place with a powerful evil waiting on the other side. Everyone has been so badly beaten they can only watch as she banishes Justice through it.
  • Echo seems like she’s going to kill Damocles next, but the Maluma manifests physically in front of everyone, furious at Echo. She failed to notice Justice steal the pontifex piece from around her neck while she was attacking her.
  • A stranger appears from the shadows, attacking Echo with terrible weapons. It’s Shayliss Arsen, Nightingale’s older sister, fighting with unparalleled skill.
  • But Echo doesn’t stay to fight. Before Shayliss can close the distance, the Soul Stitcher drags her away through a narrow opening in the cavern, too small to follow.

Together Until the End
  • Even out in the open, Alana and her wurm are just too powerful to defeat. Everyone is beaten back one by one. Alana dismounts her wurm, and advances on Nightingale, choosing her as the first to kill. But before she can reach her, she turns and screams in horror.
  • Breeze uses an incredible surge of nature magic to strike the monster, tearing it in half. She’s defenseless by the time Alana reaches her, and she’s dispatched easily, falling bleeding to the floor.
  • Ursy is there moments later, with her own magic. She stabs Alana from behind. But too late. Breeze has time for a final goodbye, then falls dead.
  • Nightingale does her best to comfort the devastated Ursy, crying with her in the ruins.

Trapped in the Dark
  • After wandering until no one in the group has the energy to keep going, they make a desperate camp in an empty chamber so they can rest and treat the injured.
  • While the others recover, Rook focuses on treating Remi’s wounds as best he can. He sets her broken wing and cleans everything out to prevent an infection.
  • Justice converses with Rook while he works, discussing the history of Gehenna with Suri. Her kind built the city, and she reveals another name for the Pontifex they’ve been hunting. This allows Justice to find it in her tome, and it gives her a map to the forbidden section of the library. They’re determined to go there as soon as Remi has more time to recover.

Traveling to Gehenna
  • The group makes camp on a hill rising above the swamps to rest and recuperate from their difficult trek.
  • While cooking with Justice, Zeke learns more about her tome: Justice believes it is alive, and that its text is always changing. The book rewrites itself to display information it thinks she needs. She has learned that the Maluma is a species of Esper from Arkalla, not the name of a single individual.
  • Zeke learns that Justice was a weeaboo, and she’s become extremely worried about Zafir’s obsession with acquiring the Pontifex. Even so, she insists that he’ll be willing to help them.
  • Justice reveals that Zafir’s organization is called the Annoyed, and she’s been going a little crazy working with them, since they’re so much older than she is.

Under Pressure
  • During the trip out of the swamps, Zafir pulls Nightingale aside. He explains how close he was with Echo, that she was the only person he ever loved. He explains that he will held Nightingale responsible for her death forever.
  • Nightingale tries to explain herself, but Zafir doesn’t care. He insists that the instant she shows any sign of letting the Maluma take control, he’ll enjoy killing her, no matter what it costs him.
  • Her friends reassure Nightingale that Echo’s death wasn’t her fault, but she doesn’t believe them.
Unexpected Savior
  • Despite their best efforts, they’re unable to stop Echo.
  • She doesn’t want to hurt Zafir, but the Soul Stitcher forces to hurt something.
  • The Maluma manifests physically in front of everyone, furious at Echo. She failed to notice Justice steal the pontifex piece from around her neck while she was attacking her. This draw’s Echo’s attention to Nightingale and the Maluma, and she advances, preparing to kill them next.
  • The Maluma tries to persuade her that they’re on the same side, but fails. Echo attacks, and the Maluma reacts with terrible power, manifesting as a gigantic devouring maw. It tears Echo apart in seconds, leaving her shredded to pieces. Nightingale tries and fails to stop it before Echo is killed.

Unplanned Ambush
  • Nightingale leads the way back into Gehenna, listening carefully for what’s going on. After not seeing the guards she expects, Nightingale scales a building to look over at what’s going on. She discovers Echo has returned and is battling against the Anointed, without seeing any sign of Zeke or Justice.
  • The group makes their way in as quickly as they can. Echo seems to be winning easily, particularly since Zafir is unwilling to fight her. Instead he watches by the sidelines as Echo easily cuts through members of his organization.
  • Remi urges them to come to the help of the Anointed and worry about dealing with them afterward. The group agrees, and they join the battle.
We Can Save Her
  • In the aftermath of the battle, Remi helps free Zeke from where he’s been tied, and does her best to help him deal with the wounds. It’s not that serious, thankfully the Annointed were only trying to stop him from resisting.
  • Justice is furious with Zafir for failing to stop Echo, and for trying to kill Nightingale. The Annointed should’ve had tons of help when Echo attacked and won easily, but instead all but two of its members were killed thanks to his actions.
  • Zafir is unapologetic, agreeing with her conclusions but insisting that he knows what’s best. Charon is such a powerful enemy that any sacrifice is worth paying, even many lives.
  • Nightingale finally gets involved, reminding him that the ones he tried to murder are Elenia’s royalty. Balthazar would probably want him dead for no other reason.
  • Zafir agrees that all the charges are accurate. But he argues that him and the Anointed are the few keeping Elenia safe from Charon and the rest of his council. If he dies, then there won’t be anyone else fighting them, and all Elenia will eventually fall.
  • Damocles wants him dead, primarily for allowing his mother’s killer to escape. The Maluma hates Zafir, but argues that Nightingale should let him go instead.
  • Nightingale and Zeke must decide how to judge Zafir while they have the upper hand.
  • ! Special: Justice is selectable again.
  • ! Special: Zeke is selectable again.

What Happened to You Guys?
  • Rook was able to hold off all the attackers that came at them in the dark, and eventually returned to resting as best he could while keeping guard.
  • Eventually the rest of the group arrives, arguing about the difficulties they had finding the tome.
  • Rook asks what happened, and they explain what happened in the archives. Remi is feeling much better now, and she’s ready to move.
What You Can’t Have
  • Padric and Suri keep watch over the others while they rest. Suri is curious about what motivates Padric to work so hard for these strangers, since he lacks the strong connections the others have.
  • Padric explains that he’s there because of love. Nor for any of them, but for another that he used to adventure with. He warns her of the pain caused by loving someone that he can’t have, that it can consume anyone who can’t learn to live with it.
  • Suri is defensive about his accusations, insisting unconvincingly that her interest in Rook is purely academic.
Winding Down
  • Justice, Zeke, and Damocles have defeated the Gatekeepers protecting the archives. Zeke urges them to return to the rest of the group.
  • Justice refuses, insisting that they’ve made it to their destination and now they’re free to take what they came for. Before they can force her, she darts off to claim their spoils.
Wurm En Route
  • Nightingale and the Anointed escape from the ruins of the library, and reunite with the rest of the group on the surface. They immediately try to flee Gehenna, but they don’t make it very far before Alana and her Wurm emerge from underground to block the way.
  • Alana is enraged about the pillaging of her food, and swears she’s going to devour all of them now.
  • ! Special: Party is reunited.
