UM1 Chapter 5 Spark Notes

UM1 Chapter 5 Spark Notes

A Brother’s Advice
  • At first Shayliss is filled with joy as her vision opens during a wedding. There is the woman she loves, waiting.
  • But it isn’t her wedding, it’s Tyrial and Abigail’s. She realizises then she’s being manipulated, and she flees from the vision, running out onto the balcony.
  • Her dead older brother Dominic is waiting for her. She tries to persuade him not to go on the trip that gets him killed, but realizes swiftly that she can’t do anything to change the past.
  • The coffin is honest with her, revealing that it’s feeding on her mind and soul. It insists that the way people die on trips with Balthazar isn’t a coincidence.

A Bump in the Night
  • Gage wakes Remi before sunrise. She dismisses his worries at first, but he’s too insistent for her to go back to sleep, and he leads her out of the bedroom.
  • She discovers the Anointed sneaking out of the palace. After following them for long enough to be sure of their intentions, she hurries back to wake everyone.
  • The group mobilizes as quickly as they can, with everyone certain of where the Anointed will be going.
  • ! Special: Zafir is Unselectable
  • ! Flag Check: Experienced Guide
A Dark Visit
  • Nightingale leads the way, the first to fight whatever they encounter. She’s not afraid anymore, the Maluma floats around beside her every moment. Compared to the parasite strangling her soul, how can any monster frighten her?
  • The Shadow Lord appears after a little while, expressing surprise they’re still alive. It mentions casually that the ‘others’ down in the depths are trying to get killed just as hard.
  • Nightingale says that she doesn’t care if they get killed, they deserve it for breaking the Aegis stone. Even so, she asks where they are.
  • The Shadow Lord finally takes notice of the Maluma, remarking that it’s going to win two souls from her.
  • Nightingale asks more respectfully, and this time the Shadow Lord answers. It appreciates the work of a serial killer, considering her a fellow craftsman.
  • The group is left to decide whether or not to follow the Shadow Lord’s instructions and find Zafir, or leave him to die.
  • ! Special: Decide to obey the Shadow Lord, or not abandon the blood trails.
A Deep Wound
  • The Soul Butchers are far too powerful, and they’re forced to flee.
  • Shayliss manages to get a side door open, but not before someone is badly wounded. They stumble out, barring the door behind them.
  • ! Special: Zeke is Injured
A Knight’s Duty
  • Nightingale is unable to make the decision, but Rook can tell what he wants to tell him. It’s his time to make a sacrifice. He makes the decision for her, so that she doesn’t have to feel guilty about his life.
  • Suri appears to try and convince him to stop, furious with grief. But she can’t talk him out of it. Rook gives the pendant to Nightingale, asking Suri to take care of everyone when he’s gone.
  • Suri rages against the Shadow Lord for a moment, ineffectively, before vanishing.
  • The Shadow Lord is appeased by the grief and pain they’ve felt, and kills Rook right in front of him. It accepts the payment, and offers them Justice.

  • ! Special: Rook has been killed
A Mother’s Remorse (Indoor)
  • Damocles wakes surrounded by the broken wreckage of the coffin, lying aching on his back. The visions he saw in the coffin still torture him.
  • Nightingale is there to bring him back to reality, and explain what he missed.
  • Damocles explains to everyone that before the coffin was destroyed, he saw some of its memories. The bloody trail they saw earlier is the key to finding Justice.
  • ! Special: Damocles is no longer Unselectable
A Mother’s Remorse (Outdoor)
  • Damocles wakes outside in the sun, though the haunting vision of his dead mother is fresh in his mind.
  • Nightingale is there beside him, to help bring him back to reality and explain that the coffin was feeding on him, he wasn’t in the real world.
  • The group does their best to catch him on what he missed, and explain how they got outside.
  • ! Special: Damocles is no longer Unselectable
A Poor Choice
  • Nightingale refuses to trade anyone. She declines the offer and demands Justice back anyway.
  • The Shadow Lord is disappointed its offer has been refused, but consoles itself that it will have all their souls now instead of one.
A Serious Problem
  • Abigail and Tyrial greet Padric with excitement, obviously old friends. They don’t seem to care much about royal formality.
  • Things are tenser for Shayliss and Abigail, who are tense and awkward around each other.
  • Shayliss introduces Nightingale, and the two fawn over her for a moment.
  • ! Flag Check: Reluctant Partnership
A Shaky Proposition
  • Justice says that if they reassemble the Pontifex with all three pieces, she could use it to seal the Maluma into a new body. But she doesn’t know where they could actually find a willing host.
  • After some debate, it is decided that Shayliss, Zeke and Padric will be traveling to Arkalla to replace the Aegis stone.
  • Nightingale, Remi, Rook, Damocles, and Justice will go to the vaults to get the last piece of the pontifex.
  • ! Party Check: Is Zafir in the party?
A Short Victory
  • After a terrible fight, they’re finally able to defeat the Soul Butcher.
  • They don’t stay for long, as the sound of more creatures echoes thorugh the halls. The Pixies return, guiding them to a hasty escape before more butchers arrive.
A Somber Realization
  • Shayliss stops the group after walking a long while, horrified by what she’s discovered. She rages that Justice is lost and there’s nothing they can do. Her map didn’t show it, but now that she’s here she recognizes the spot.
  • Shayliss explains that Justice is trapped beyond the protection of the Aegis stone, an ancient and powerful protection put in place by Lo Jeong. It’s the only thing keeping Greyhaven safe from thousands of creatures that dwell in the Eerie.
  • After discovering there’s no other way to open it without putting the city at risk, Nightingale suggests asking the city’s rulers, Tyrial and Abigail, about the Aegis stone. Maybe they’ll have a way to get them past it without putting Greyhaven at risk.
  • Zeke is upset to leave Justice behind, but after seeing how much the Maluma has worn Nightingale down, he reluctantly allows them to leave.
  • ! Flag Check: Reluctant Partnership
A Son’s Failure
  • Damocles is forced to relive the night of his mother’s exposure to the Blight. He watches in lurid detail as his own failures lead to her exposure.
  • She rots away before his eyes, forcing him to kill her and filling him with guilt over his failure to save her life.
  • ! Flag Check: Coffin Buddy
A Stupid Boy
  • Rook wakes early into the morning to a jostling sound, and discovers Zeke has slipped away.
  • He wakes the others, informing them that Zeke has probably gone off to rescue justice. The group is sure he can’t get through the Aegis stone, but he could get himself hurt.
  • The group hastily packs their bags and hurries out after him.
  • ! Special: Zeke is Unselectable

All That Matters
  • Nightingale watches in horror as the Butcher decaipates Zafir before her eyes, butchering him in seconds. It turns on her, but before it can reach her Ezra and Brea arrive, fighting desperately to hold it back from Nightingale.
  • Ezra urges Nightingale and the group to flee, reminding them that the Pontifex is all that matters. They use this opportunity to escape as quickly as they can, making it some distance before they find an empty chamber to rest in.
  • The group discusses Zafir’s sacrifice. Damocles is unmoved by their deaths, while Remi is furious at the fate they suffered.
  • Nightingale has a breakdown, believing that Damocles was right. All of Greyhaven was condemned because of her mercy. The city will die, the group will die, and it will be Nightingale’s fault.
  • Zeke calms her down, though Nightingale remains grim.
  • ! New Story Flag: Butchered
  • ! Special: Zafir was killed
Amateurs
  • The group is unwilling to give up, so rather than fight past the overwhelming monsters, they run wildly through the forest, dodging through dense foliage until they’re able to find another way around.
  • Zeke reminds them that Justice is waiting, that there’s no time to rest and recover. They must fight on.
Amusing
  • Defeating the Shadow Lord is impossible, and it beats the party back with ease. Yet it hasn’t killed any of them yet, apparently intending to savor their deaths one by one.
  • The Shadow Lord muses that it obviously needs to return to the surface, humans have grown complacent if they think they can fight powers greater than themselves.
  • ! Flag Check: Reluctant Partnership AND A Helping Hand
And Who is This?
  • Tyrial notices the Anointed lurking in the corner of the room. Zafir introduces their group, and explains the dark gods they fight. Abigail and Tyrial clearly think they’re completely insane.
  • When introductions are over, Nightingale explains their mission, and why they need to get into the Eerie.
  • Tyrial insists this is impossible, explaining that the dragon-slaying mural on their wall depicts the way Lo and Ida obtained it in the first place. They had to travel the Middle Passage, make a pact with a demon, then enter Arkalla and kill a dragon within. It would be impossible to recreate their feat.
  • There is no way to open the way into the Eerie. They ask Zeke if Justice would want to sacrifice the lives of everyone in the city to save herself. He admits that she wouldn’t.
  • Zafir insists that it wouldn’t be Justice’s choice to make. Not getting her and the piece of the Pontifex back might mean the death for everyone in Elenia. Even sacrificing a city is a modest price to pay.
  • Tyrial is outraged at the suggestion, and rejects the suggestion outright. Zafir stops arguing and submits quietly.
  • Abigail tries to reassure Nightingale that they’ll feel better tomorrow, and might be able to figure out what to do then.

Anything for Our Friends
  • Zeke’s persuasions ultimately win out and they agree to help the coffin to the surface.
  • The group returns to inform it, and the coffin is grateful. It insists it knows the fastest way to the surface. The pixies drag it easily out the way they came.
  • ! New Story Flag: Coffin Buddy
Back Off
  • After making it a little distance from the Eerie, Damocles attacks Echo, knocking her out in a single strike.
  • Zafir and the Anointed turn, furious. Damocles is unrepentant, explaining that without the Shadow Lord around, the Soul Stitcher will return and make Echo violent again. Keeping her unconscious is the only way to keep her pacified.
  • Zafir is unconvinced, and they nearly attack each other. Brea and Ezra hold him back, while Padric and Rook keep Damocles from fighting.
  • Shayliss tells them all to shut up and threatens everyone with imprisonment who tries to get violent. Getting back to Greyhaven is the only thing that matters now.
Back to the Surface
  • With the Shadow Lord gone, the Eerie seems to be collapsing around them, or at least his lair is. It’s a strain on all of them to escape intact. Eventually they reach the surface, and clamber out of the Eerie and into the light.
  • The group collapses to rest, but Shayliss urges them onward. Greyhaven needs a warning, and they have to give it.

Blackhand Protégé
  • While trapped in the coffin, Remi sees a vision of her future. She’s become an assassin for the black hand, ruthless and powerful.
  • She is on a mission to assassinate a powerful political target. But it’s personal for her. After killing everyone in her way, she reaches the bedroom of Princess Nightingale, last of the Arsen family. She’s been poisoned, but survives, forcing Remi to kill her herself.
  • She tries to justify the murder to herself, but ultimately refuses to do it. Her real memories are too powerful to ignore.
  • ! Flag Check: Coffin Buddy
Blood Trails
  • The group travels through the Eeriee, following the trails of blood deeper. The Maluma torments Nightingale, trying to get her to leave. She ignores it for some distance, until the creature manifests physically before everyone.
  • Shayliss reacts with instant violence, but the Maluma is only a projection, and nothing happens. It explains they’ve reached the lair of the Shadow Lord. If they go further and they’re killed, their souls will be his forever.
  • Nightingale mocks it, pointing out that the Maluma is only afraid because it too would be captured. They ignore it and continue on.
  • The Maluma wasn’t lying, and soon they pass through a boundry into the Shadow Lord’s lair. The creature notices them instantly, manifesting as a faint projection. It admits that Justice is trapped in its lair, and they’ll never find her.
  • When it’s finished mocking them the Shadow Lord vanishes, leaving them free to continue downward.

Brawl
  • Shayliss answers instantly that none of this is their fault, and brings out Echo. She explains what happened, that Echo was the one who destroyed the stone.
  • Tyrial appears, dragging Echo away to the dungeons. Damocles informs them of Echo’s dangerous Esper and her ability to come back to life.
  • Zafir defends Echo, explaining that she was manipulated by the Esper, it wasn’t her decision. Tyrial doesn’t seem to care, and says that defending the city is all that matters. Her trial can wait.
City at the Edge of the World
  • For a moment the group is stunned by their first sight of Greyhaven, a massive city with a palace floating in the sky above. It’s almost as big as Elenia, and the skies around them are filled with traffic.
  • Remi learns the palace is called the Amaranthine, a fortress used by Lo and Ida when the ruins of the city were still overflowing with monsters.
  • Even so, all the beauty could come crashing down if the city’s Float Core were destroyed, since they use the same magic as the airships, just much larger.
  • Remi wants to explore the city, but Shayliss informs her that they won’t have time. Saving Justice is desperately urgent, and they’ll have to make her their first priority if they want to get to her in time.
Cosmic Puppets
  • Zafir is forced to relive his years of happiness with Echo. They’re together again in safety, before Charon’s betrayal.
  • The vision shifts as Echo confronts him about being abandoned, insisting that she’s been alive all this time and he didn’t care enough to save her.
  • Zafir vows to do anything to get her back, but he’s tortured by visions of how she’s been alive and dead over and over again as she’s used as a puppet to do Charon’s bidding.

Cowards
  • The group wants to abandon Echo to her fate.
  • Nightingale remembers her promise, and refuses to do so. She chides her friends, then charges into battle, forcing the others to follow.
Cut the Strings (Indoor)
  • Zafir wakes screaming, overwhelmed by what he saw. Beside him is the broken coffin, which the group has hacked apart to finally get him free. Shayliss holds him down until he finally realizes what happened.
  • The group explains how they were able to defeat the coffin and its Espers.
  • Zafir shares that before the coffin was destroyed, he saw into its mind. He clearly connected the rescue of justice to the bloody trail on the ground. They need to follow it right away to reach her.

Damage Control
  • Zafir is eager to accept the monster’s help. It’s going to escape anyway, and saving justice is their first priority.
  • Brea the Anointed explains that the coffin is the receptacle for a soul, keeping the one inside safe from the Shadow Lord.
  • Damocles agrees with Zafir, trying to persuade Nightingale and Shayliss to take the creature’s help.
Dead Now
  • Shayliss explains that they weren’t the ones to destroy the Aegis stone, they went in to try and stop it.
  • Abigail wants to know who it was, but Shayliss has to tell them that they’re already dead. Abigail is unhappy, apparently uninterested in revenge. All that matters is saving the city.
Descent into the Eerie
  • Remi ends up at the front as they climb down into the Eerie, taking in the ancient, long-untouched geography of the place.
  • Soon enough they’re past the reach of sunlight, in a maze of twisting passages. Now they have to navigate.
  • ! Reward Check: Chalice of Manala
Efficient
  • Shayliss explains that they weren’t the ones to destroy the Aegis stone, they went in to try and stop it.
  • Abigail wants to know who it was, and Shayliss explains that it was Zafir, and that he died for it. His death won’t help Greyhaven now.
  • Tyrial urges them to return to planning the defense.
Ending 5: Screaming
  • The Coffin’s terrible power is beyond anything they can resist. It shows no mercy, slaughtering the group one at a time.
  • Zeke is the last one left alive, watching as it finally advances on him.
  • As he dies, his soul is pulled downward, to join the others trapped in torment. At least he finally finds Justice.
  • Game Over
Ending 6: Horrific Creatures
  • No one would ever know what happened to Elenia’s princesses or their brave companions. In the end, stories would be told (incorrectly) of how they’d learned of the destroyed Aegis stone and gone down to hold off the hoards of monsters and protect Greyhaven.
  • They failed here too, but at least their noble sacrifice would be remembered.
  • GAME OVER
Evicted (Indoor)
  • Nightingale wakes in the cavern, mind still spinning from her vision. She’s left firmly remembering one thing above all others: the Maluma’s chief drive isn’t loyalty to Charon, it’s just staying on Middara.
  • The coffin has been beaten to wreckage beside her, the fight finally won.
  • Her friends help her to her feet, discovering that Nightingale is relatively unharmed from her experience. They get her back up to speed on what happened, and how they ended up outside.
  • Nightingale explains that she briefly saw the memories of the coffin before it was destroyed. She’s sure the bloody trail is the key to finding Justice.

Farmer’s Blight
  • Rook’s vision while trapped inside the coffin is of his life on the farm. He’s returned to live with his parents, and they’re not alone. Suri is living with him, his wife after their time adventuring together.
  • His peaceful vision is interrupted as they’re attacked by the Great Bounty. They’ve been tracked down at last.
  • Rook tries to fight, but he’s forced to watch as his family is slaughtered. He tries in vain to free her, but he’s too weak, and Suri is taken back to Arkalla.

Finding Another Way
  • Despite Zeke’s insistence, in the end the group refuses to assist the coffin. They hope to just leave it behind, and pray it gets lost on its way to the surface.
  • The pixies react with fury to this news. Rather than taking the coffin and leaving, they instantly turn hostile, blocking off the exit.
  • Terrible power reaches out from within the coffin, grabbing the nearest member of the group and dragging them in.
  • ! Special: An Uninjured Adventurer is Unselectable
Finish: Heart of a Dragon
  • Nightingale and Shayliss discuss their upcoming missions. Nightingale explains that the Maluma is keeping its word so far. She wants to know if Shayliss thinks they can really save Greyhaven.
  • Shayliss says she’s heard the stories, and knows it’s possible. She promises that after they make it out of all this, Nightingale will be in the Demiurge for sure.
  • Nightingale admits she hasn’t even thought about it in ages, though she does worry about Kufu. Now that she’s survived so much, she thinks the demiurge will probably be simple for her.
Fixing This
  • The group returns to the throne room to discuss the battle for Greyhaven. It’s already going badly. These aren’t mindless monsters rampaging, they’ve been plotting their revenge for years. An evacuation is underway, but many will not be able to escape.
  • There is only one way to save the city: reseal the Eerie with a new Aegis stone. They discuss the method used last time: a contract made with a demon, then the trip to Arkalla, and finally killing a dragon.
  • During this impossible task, Greyhaven will be under siege. If the attackers reach the float core, the palace will fall and the city will be destroyed.
  • Tyrial will fly to Castikoff for reinforcements while Abigail defends the city and protects the float core.

Flying Without Wings
  • Rook discovers Ursy has climbed all the way up to the Crow’s nest, where she’s enjoying their flight with no regard for the dangers. After enjoying her perch for a few moments more, she agrees to join Rook back on the deck.
  • Rook chides her for her dangerous choice, explaining that the Oppressor is taking the fastest but most dangerous route to Greyhaven, and that she needs to be somewhere safe in case they’re attacked.
Forgive the Girl
  • The Shadow Lord is far more powerful than it initially seems. Though they all fight together, it’s just too powerful. Soon they’re completely overwhelmed, and they’re about to die one at a time.
  • Zafir calls out before that can happen, attracting the demigod’s attention. He asks the Shadow Lord to forgive Nightingale, that the attack was against his will, and they would like to ask for the initial offer. He will give up his life so the rest of them can leave.
  • Nightingale tries to talk him out of making the choice, but he has made up his mind. The Shadow Lord kills him in front of everyone, giving them Justice in exchange.
  • ! New Story Flag: A Greater Cause
  • ! Special: Zafir has died
Fresh Air
  • The Coffin leads them the rest of the way to the surface, forcing them to follow all the way during the long hike up the canyon.
  • Eventually they reach the surface. The Coffin is eager to be out, and at least it keeps its word. It explains that the way to find Justice is to follow the blood trails into the Shadow Lord’s lair.
  • Shayliss doesn’t want to let the monster leave, but they’re running out of time. They can’t afford to waste time fighting it now.
  • ! New Flag: Time is of the Essence
Get Off of Her!
  • All of them working together are finally able to kill the Butcher. Echo remains wounded, and the Stitcher is nowhere to be seen. Apparently it can’t reach here to repair her injuries.
  • Damocles attacks her immediately, determined to kill her at last. Rook and Padric pull him off. Shayliss explains that all of Greyhaven have a right to justice from her as well, and that he’ll have to bide his time. They need all the help they can get to escape from the Shadow Lord alive.
  • Echo agrees, explaining that she couldn’t possibly fight to the Shadow Lord on her own.
  • They confiscate Echo’s weapons for the time being, after protest.
  • Nightingale explains why they’re sparing her: she made a promise to Zafir and she intends to keep it.
  • ! New Story Flag: A Helping Hand
Get Off of Him!
  • All of them working together are finally able to slay the Butcher.
  • The Anointed use this moment of calm to treat Zafir’s wounds, giving him the last of their powerful potions to get him back on his feet.
  • Shayliss seems willing to confront them right there, until the anointed point out how desperately bad their odds of survival are on their own.
  • The rest of the group agrees, suggesting that Zafir can stand trial for destroying the Aegis stone after they escape.
  • The Shadow Lord appears, hoping they’ll kill each other, but they refuse. It leaves them alone, confident they will find their deaths another way.
  • ! New Story Flag: All We Can Get

Give Me a Chance
  • Shayliss points out that they still have to figure out what to do with Zafir. She believes he should be imprisoned for his actions, that he’s far too dangerous and he’s guilty of violence against the princess.
  • Zafir counters that Nightingale is dying and that his help is too important. He knows Charon and its servants better than anyone.
  • The Maluma wants Nightingale to get rid of him.
  • ! Special: The party must decide to Lock the Anointed Up, or Let them Help
Give Us an Hour
  • Zafir informs everyone that him and the other Anointed can bring the barrier down with an hour of ritual magic. They’re ready to start right away.
  • Shayliss responds in range, explaining the importance of the Aegis stone and the creatures that will be released to devour Greyhaven as soon as the stone is destroyed.
  • Zafir doesn’t care if the city dies, since he believes that the world may perish if no one retrieves the Pontifex. He’s willing to sacrifice anything to cross.
  • Nightingale demands that he stop, and reluctantly he agrees to come back with them to the Amaranthine.
Grabbing Our Things
  • The Pixies warn the group not to touch anything, that the room is trapped for those who might find it, but not for them.
  • They fly towards the huge coffin at the center, lifting it by its chains and dragging it out of the gold with surprising strength. The illusion of wealth vanishes, leaving them alone with the coffin. They say that the rescue is complete and now they can leave.
  • Zeke wants to know how they’re saving their master if they’re already dead, before a voice echoes from within the coffin. A strange voice echoes from inside. At first it seems hostile, before the Pixies informs it that the group isn’t food, and that they’re on an important quest.
  • Zeke says that in exchange for freeing them, he wants to know how to find Justice. The coffin promises that in exchange for their help escaping the lair, it will tell them how to find her.
  • The group confers in private to discuss their options.

Greyhaven Revisited
  • As they close in on Greyhaven, it’s clear that they’ve come too late. A wide trail of death leads straight to the city.
  • When they finally arrive, their worst fears are confirmed. Fires burn as little battles rage all over. The sound of screaming citizens mingles with the roars of the monsters devouring them.
  • Nightingale wants to help the citizens, but Shayliss stops her, reminding Nightingale that the group has been beaten to a pulp and doesn’t have the strength right now. They need to reach the Amaranthine and help organize the defense from there.
  • A gigantic wurm emerges from the ground in front of them, smelling their blood. But before they can be devoured, a familiar airship arrives. Effie bombards the creature, sending it back underground and lowering a ladder for them. They climb aboard, ordering her to take them to the palace.
  • The group asks that she stay close, that they might need her ship later. She pilots them down to the battlements and lets them off. Abigail is waiting there to confront them as soon as they disembark. She demands to know why they would’ve destroyed the

  • As soon as they make it a little distance from the Eerie, Nightingale hears a sharp crack, and turns around to discover that Damocles has struck Echo from behind, knocking her out cold.
  • Shayliss is furious, and orders Damocles to carry her the rest of the way.
Haunted
  • Zeke hurries over to revive Justice, who eventually wakes. She wants to know how they got there. Zeke explains they had to trade someone’s life to get her back.
  • Justice is furious with them, horrified at what they’ve done. She insists they take it back, but of course it’s too late.
  • Nightingale explains that it was her choice to make the trade, despite everything.
  • The Shadow Lord wishes Justice a surprisingly polite farewell. She doesn’t seem wounded, but her eyes are haunted and horrified whenever she looks at it.
  • Zeke comforts her, ineffectively.
Haunting Words (Indoor)
  • Shayliss wakes on the floor beside the broken coffin, shaking off the memories of what she’s seen. Nightingale is there to greet her and help comfort her. Shayliss knows clearly what happened, and doesn’t need much of an explanation.

He’ll Be Fine
  • The group decides that the Shadow Lord is probably lying, and even if he isn’t who cares about Zafir? They decide not to go and save him.
  • The Shadow Lord laughs, vanishing from before them.
  • Damocles insists that they’re still on the right path, and they should be ignoring everything the Shadow Lord does.
  • ! New Story Flag: Capable Enough
  • ! Special: Zafir leaves the party.
He’s an Asset
  • Nightingale is nervous to admit it, but Zafir is just too important to sacrifice. Despite the others disbelief, she refuses to budge.
  • Zafir agrees to travel with Nightingale to find the Pontifex, then to leave her alone forever.
Here’s the Split
  • Justice says that if they reassemble the Pontifex with all three pieces, she could use it to seal the Maluma into a new body. But she doesn’t know where they could actually find a willing host.
  • After some discussion, the group decides to send Shayliss, Zeke, and Padric to Arkalla while Justice, Nightingale, Damocles, and Remi travel to find the last piece of the pontifex.
  • Tyrial wants to know where the knight will be going, and Nightingale explains that he’s dead.

How Do We Handle This?
  • Shayliss explains that they weren’t the one to break the Aegis stone, and they bring up the unconscious body of Echo. She explains that she was the one who broke the stone, and they caught her.
  • Damocles warns them of her powers, and the Esper that heals her.
  • Tyrial calls for the guards, and they carry her off to a secure cell of the dungeons.
I’m Safe
  • Rook uses his pendant, calling on Suri’s help.
  • She appears, gleeful and excited to see him again. After a brief conversation, she flies off, creating a trail for them to follow to safety.
Into the Earth
  • After they reach a mountainous cliffside, Shayliss stops the group to lecture them about the danger they’re about to be in.
  • She explains that the Shadow Lord isn’t like any monster they’ve fought before. It’s a God of death, literally immortal. It can harvest the souls of the ones that die in its domain.
  • The group is unwilling to turn around. They must save Justice.
  • Eventually they reach a massive opening in the earth, with a glowing stone floating above it. A powerful magic emanates from the stone, creating a barrier down into the ground that they cannot cross. Physical and magical attacks are both deflected without apparent effect.
It Wasn’t Me!
  • They reach the Aegis stone just in time to see a terrible explosion as it’s shattered. After surviving the shockwave, they rush forward in confusion, determined to find Zeke.
  • They do, but not where they expect. Zeke isn’t anywhere near the stone, but is lying on the ground, badly beaten.
  • After interrogating him, they learn he’d come with no real hope of opening the Aegis stone, but was confronted by Echo. She beat him senseless, then continued on to destroy the stone and pass into the Eerie.
  • Shayliss insists they return to warn Greyhaven, but Zeke refuses. He’s going to rescue Justice no matter what.
  • Nightingale sides with Zeke, arguging that it will take time for the monsters inside to notice. If they can get Justice out quickly, they can save her and still warn the city.

It’s My Decision
  • Rook watches in horror as the Shadow Lord easily overcomes his friends one at a time. They fought hard, but the creature is far too powerful. They obviously never stood a chance. Finally he attracts its attention, before it can start killing them.
  • Rook points out that the Shadow Lord claimed its word was absolute. It never applied any conditions on the deal, and so they should still be able to take it. He wants to trade his life for Justice’s, and their safe exit from its domain.
  • The Shadow Lord is impressed with his cleverness, and accepts the exchange. Suri emerges to try to talk him out of it, but the odds are stacked against them. They already tired to fight, and failed.
  • Rook gives her pendant to Nightingale. Suri is furious, and lashes out against the Deathlord without effect, before vanishing.
  • Rook begs the group to take good care of Suri now that he’s gone. The Shadow Lord murders him before their eyes, giving them Justice in exchange.

Left Behind
  • The battle goes badly, and the group is overwhelmed by the waiting Butchers. Before they can be killed, the coffin finds an exit, and calls for them to follow.
  • The pixies insist that Zeke must continue fighting, because that’s what loyal knights are supposed to do.
  • Zeke insists that it won’t matter, so long as they keep their promise and lead them to Justice.

Let Me Help
  • Aisling manages to escape her prison, dragging her way to the throne room in the confusion. The guards are caught up with her, but since she hasn’t become violent they don’t actually hurt her yet.
  • Aisling demands to be allowed to help defend Greyhaven. She says she’ll risk her life and fight for them, in exchange for a full pardon.
  • They agree to give it to her, if they successfully defend the city.
  • Remi is outraged, but quickly overpowered. The situation is so desperate that no one wants to give up help they need.
  • ! Flag Check: Last of her Cotorie
Losing It
  • Nightingale doesn’t want to break her promise to Zafir. Her friends all pressure her to go different ways, some insisting they don’t have time while others wanting to save Echo.
  • ! Decision: Nightingale’s player must make a choice
Lost in the Eerie
  • Rook leads the way, though it doesn’t seem like he knows where he’s going more than anyone else.
  • The Maluma speaks to Nightingale, trying to convince her to give up. The trip is far too dangerous. He informs Nightingale of the dangers to them if they’re killed here, that the Shadow Lord will enslave their souls forever if they die.
  • Zeke discovers bloodstains on the ground, which glow briefly when touched.
  • While they’re deliberating, a pair of creatures appear in the darkness, a set of adorable pies that greet them like they’re brave adventurers sent to rescue them. They quickly take a liking to Zeke.
  • Zeke explains their mission, and the pixies respond that they can help with the rescue. They need to get a few things, but it’s on the way to save the girl anyway.
  • The rest of the group is doubtful of their trustworthiness, but Zeke insists that they must know where they’re going, and the group follows.
Lost Soul
  • They do their best to fight, but this Soul Butcher is far too strong to overcome. As they begin to lose, Rook drags them away, leaving the monster to focus on Echo.
  • She is barely able to hold it back for a few moments before it reaches her, cutting her down in seconds.
  • They watch in horror as she’s devoured before their eyes. Her spirit appears beside her slain body, collapsing onto the floor to weep, inconsolable with grief.
  • ! New Story Flag: Good Riddance
Lucid
  • After following the Shadow Lord’s instructions, the group reaches a room a little like the kitchen used by the Soul Butchers.
  • Eventually they come upon Echo, cornered by a gigantic Soul Butcher covered in armor. Echo has clearly been killed several times now, but her Esper keeps putting her back together. Even so, its power seems to be weining.
  • The group debates whether to help. Shayliss doesn’t want to get involved, while Damocles wants to kill Echo himself. Nightingale thinks its much too cruel to leave her to her fate.
  • ! Flag Check: Reluctant Partnership
Make Him Pay
  • Zafir says that he’s seen gods die before, and this one will be no difference. The Shadow Lord murdered echo, and for that it should die.
  • Shayliss argues that it isn’t his choice to make. When Nightingale asks her what to do, she thinks that turning Rook over is the best option to escape alive.
  • Ultimately it’s Nightingale’s decision to make.
  • ! Decision: Trade Rook, or Refuse.
Making Friends
  • After the game, Zeke snatches the rare card before Effie can get it back. He explains that he’s going to keep the card until she can prove that the Oppressor has become as mighty as the Memnoch.
  • Before she can argue with him, a member of her crew needs her help, and she’s called away, letting Zeke keep the card.
Memnoch, the Flying Fortress
  • While sulking in private to smoke, Zeke encounters the captain of the Oppressor, a young woman named Effie Grand. They argue briefly over the aptness of the ship’s name, with Zeke suggesting such a little ship should have a smaller name.
  • Effie responds that she’s been saving for years, and that each trip allows her to upgrade her ship. She shows off a rare Abraxis card: Memnoch, the Flying Fortress.
  • They agree to play against the card right there and try their luck.
My Only Goal
  • Though they fight desperately to reach Echo, they can’t get to her in time. The Butcher is just too powerful, even with Zafir and the Anointed fighting at their side.
  • Before they can stop him, the Soul Butcher tears into her, severing Echo from her Esper and slicing her body into pieces.
  • As she dies before their eyes, her spirit appears in the air beside her, weeping inconsolably with grief.
  • The Shadow Lord appears to mock them. Zafir begs for Echo’s soul to be released, but the Shadow Lord refuses. After all, her body is being eaten before their eyes. They’ve failed.
  • ! New Story Flag: Sacrifice
My Responsibility
  • Nightingale reluctantly asks Zafir to make the trade. Zafir removes his gear without a word, giving it over one piece at a time.
  • He shares one last message, explaining that he knew Charon while he was human. He explains that with him dead, stopping him will be Nightingale’s responsibility now. The Maluma isn’t her real enemy, it’s only a pawn.
  • The Shadow Lord kills Zafir in front of them. The Maluma is satisfied to see him die in agony.
  • The bargain is struck, and the Shadow Lord accepts their payment.

  • The Shadow Lord explains that the Eerie’s trapped creatures have discovered they’re free, and are heading to Greyhaven for their revenge. It is eager to go and collect souls. The Shadow Lord finally vanishes from before them.
  • Shayliss urges them to move, before the passage they used collapsed right in front of them.
  • Nightingale calls for Suri, desperate for anyone who might know another way out.

Next Life
  • Echo watches in horror as Zafir dies right in front of her.
  • Nightingale tries to comfort her, though it’s a cold comfort since she was the one to ask for Zafir’s life.
  • Echo remains surprisingly calm, insisting that it’s only the Stitcher that forces her to act the way they’ve known. She doesn’t get violent with them, despite what just happened.
  • She reminds the group that Zafir didn’t die to save Nightingale, but for something much more important. She reminds them that it’s now their responsibility to stop Charon now that he’s gone.
No Such Thing as Gods
  • Zafir immediately takes the lead. He insists that the Anointed have fought more powerful creatures than a Shadow Lord before. Just because it calls itself a god doesn’t mean it is.
Not the First
  • Zafir tells the Shadow Lord that he’s seen gods die before. But he turns over his sword, offering to die instead of Rook.
  • Nightingale isn’t sure what to do, and she asks Shayliss for advice. Her sister thinks that turning someone over is the best way to escape alive with Justice. There is a good chance the Shadow Lord will kill them.
  • ! Decision: Trade Zafir, Trade Rook, or Refuse.
Now or Never
  • The coffin’s power is too great, particularly with the group split. They’re beaten to a pulp, and the coffin is about to start killing them.
  • Zeke draws the glowing chalice, waving it around and trying to get it to do anything. Suddenly it does, and they vanish in a flash of light. Suddenly all of them are outside the Eerie.
  • The coffin reluctantly releases the one it had trapped inside, agreeing that the bargain was kept despite their violence.

Now What?
  • Zeke leads the way out, but there’s no way to go but back the way they’ve come. They’ll have to fight their way back through the Soul Butcher’s den.
  • Zeke doubts that they made the right choice by destroying the coffin, but it’s too late now.
Odd Farewell
  • Shayliss asks the coffin what it will do now that it’s free. It responds that it plans on getting revenge on the ones who got it sealed in the Eerie in the first place.
  • She takes a morally superior position, but the coffin is unimpressed.
  • Before they leave, the pixies explain the key to finding Justice: they need to follow the glowing blood. It’s the safest path to the Shadow Lord’s tomb.
Official Airship
  • The group hastily boards the Oppressor and departs Greyhaven. The battle rages all around them as they make their escape.
  • Nightingale and Zeke share a private farewell, knowing that they’ll now have to go their separate ways. They worry about each of their companions, particularly Justice with all she went through.
  • Effie interrupts them, calling that they’re about to cross into dangerous territory. The group agrees that they aren’t giving up now, no matter the danger.

  • Padric reminds Shayliss that doing dangerous things comes with being a member of the Arsen family, as evidenced by their flight over the Middle Passage at that moment.

Padric’s Help
  • With Zeke gone, the group needs all the help they can get, and Shaylis goes straight to Padric’s room. He wakes groggily, and they discover he hasn’t been sleeping alone Aisling is with him, and they’ve been intimate.
  • Padric is apologetic, and agrees to come along and help, but asks that Remi not have to find out, considering what Aisling almost did to her.
  • Shayliss is still just as unhappy, and curses to herself all the way down.
  • ! Special: Padric joins the party!
Please Help!
  • Nightingale calls on Rook’s necklace, summoning Suri. She begs for her help to escape before they’re crushed by the earthquake.
  • Suri is bitter, and suggests that maybe they should all die. But after being reminded that Rook wanted her to help them, she begrudgingly agrees, and leads them out.
Powerful Magic
  • They arrive at the Aegis stone too late, as they’re close enough to see the explosion as Zafir and the anointed finally penetrate it.
  • The group rushes forward, and finds that Zafir and the Anointed have already passed down into the Eerie. Shayliss insists they return to warn Greyhaven, but Zeke refuses. He’s going to rescue Justice no matter what.
  • Nightingale sides with Zeke, arguging that it will take time for the monsters inside to notice. If they can get Justice out quickly, they can save her and still warn the city.
  • The Maluma tries to persuade Nightingale not to enter, but she ignores it, leading the way down into the depths.
Princess?
  • Shayliss points out that Rook is Nightingale’s night, not Justice’s. He doesn’t have to die for her, and if he does he won’t be able to protect Nightingale anymore.
  • He turns to Nightingale, deferring to her decision. She asks her sister for advice, but Shayliss only repeats the stories that a Shadow Lord can’t be killed.
  • Rook says that he’ll sacrifice himself if she asks. He’s ready to obey.
  • ! Decision: Trade Rook, or Refuse
Promise Me
  • Zafir is confident they can kill the Shadow Lord if they have to, he’s killed gods before. But he says they don’t have time—saving Justice is more important than any of their lives. They have to keep the Pontifex from Charon. He volenteers to make the trade.
  • Echo is heartbroken and furious, trying to convince him to stop. But he refuses—he’s willing to give up his personal happiness if it means success in their mission.
  • Nightingale asks Shayliss what they should do. Shayliss agrees they should turn someone over to escape safely. But she also says that if it was her decision, she would never leave someone behind.

Protecting the People
  • Ursy approaches the throne with Abigail. She’s grateful for everything she received, and wants to return the favor.

Punishment
  • Zafir admits to destroying the Aegis stone, and is completely unrepentant.
  • Tyrial is furious, demanding to know why he would condemn his whole city to die. When Zafir responds that there is much more at stake, Tyrial seems to want to kill him right there.
  • Abigail stops him, and they have a brief conversation about the sincerity of his beliefs.
  • Tyrial calls the guards and throws the Anointed into the dungeons, despite Justice’s protests that they did save her and she has the Pontifex piece needed to help Nightingale.
  • Zafir pleads to be allowed to help, but Tyrial ignores him, and Shayliss won’t speak for him.
  • ! New Story Flag: Imprisoned Anointed

Quest for Justice
  • After explaining how they got there, Nightingale asks Abigail for a way to temporarily lift the Aegis stone and enter the Eerie, so that they can free Justice and retrieve her part of the Pontifex.
  • Abigail tries to reassure Nightingale that they’ll feel better tomorrow, and might be able to figure out what to do then.

  • Nightingale introduces herself, and confirms what Padric has told them about the Maluma.
  • Remi reacts with horror, discovering Aisling in chains standing in a corner of the room, with an escort of guards.

Safe Passage

  • Nightingale invites her to come along, worried she’ll be harmed in the Shadow Lord’s lair. She politely declines, explaining that she’s been promised safe passage.
  • They ask why the Shadow Lord would make a promise like that. Lakshmi doesn’t know, but she trusts the promise.
She Tried
  • Shayliss explains that they weren’t the ones to destroy the Aegis stone, they went in to try and stop it.
  • Abigail wants to know who it was, but Zafir explains that they’re already dead. They were killed in the Eerie.
  • Abigail is unhappy, apparently uninterested in revenge. All that matters is saving the city.

  • At the back of the group, Zafir and the Annointed speak privately of what is to come.
  • Ezra wishes for Zafir to admin what they’ll have to do, and that they’ve lost Echo for good, but Zafir refuses to admit this, arguing that the knowledge she has gained could be valuble if they can free her.
  • Brea confronts him, insisting that he needs to be ready for the possibility that Echo is lost forever.

Spirits
  • After traveling for hours, the group leaves the caverns of the Eerie behind, entering ancient stone ruins carved too large for human use.
  • The Shadow Lord arrives, disappointed that they made it so far into the ruins without being killed. They should’ve been killed a dozen different ways, and somehow they avoided the traps. Then it realizes that the Coffin must’ve been helping them, and it hopes that they killed it to steal its wisdom.
  • The Shadow Lord opens a dozen different passages, and the screams of furious dead emerge from each one. An army is coming for them. The spirits surround them in moments, filling the room in preparation to kill them.
  • They don’t stand a chance, they’re going to be slaughtered.
  • Zeke screams in desperation, accusing the Shadow Lord of being a coward who won’t dare face them in person.
  • This seems to work—the Shadow Lord calls off his army, opening only one door of many. It invites them to join it to die, then vanishes.
  • Shayliss Chastises Zeke for his stupidity, but he insists it was their only chance. It worked, after all.
  • Suri appears, begging Rook to turn around. He refuses, and Suri is horrified. She refuses to watch Rook die, and finally vanishes.
  • They follow the path directly to a throne of bone and corpses. The Shadow Lord waits, along with Justice trapped beside the throne. She’s still alive, somehow.
  • Zeke demands the Shadow Lord return Justice, and he responds with amusement. They’re the first humans to attract its attention in a long time. It offers them a bargain to trade one of their lives for Justice.
  • Rook volunteers immediately, and the group tells him to shut up. It’s probably a lie anyway.
  • The Shadow Lord responds in rage, furious that they would imply its word wasn’t good. It insists that all its promises must always be kept. Lying is for lesser creatures. Justice is incredibly valuable, but its willing trade her for one of their worthless lives anyway.
  • The group deliberates, wondering if there’s another way. Zeke suggests they just fight it, but Rook argues. The Shadow Lord is too powerful, he thinks. They’re doomed.

  • Eventually Zafir catches up with Nightingale. He shares a moment of solidarity with her, thanking her for being willing to fight for Echo despite everything.
Stop Fighting!
  • All of them working together are finally able to kill the Butcher. Echo remains wounded, and the Stitcher is nowhere to be seen. Apparently it can’t reach here to repair her injuries.
  • Damocles attacks her immediately, determined to kill her at last. Zafir pulls him off, and makes it clear that he’ll kill him if he harms Echo. There’s a tense standoff, before Shayliss points out just how important it is they work together until they escape the Shadow Lord.

The Secluded Forest
  • It’s clear to Rook after traveling for a short distance that they’ve traveled far past the edge of civilization.

  • Shayliss discovers Nightingale has been deeply injured during the battle, and is now unable to fight. Shayliss does her best to give her first aid, but there’s no time to stop and turn around yet.
  • Rook offers to carry her, but Nightingale refuses, insisting that she can at least hobble along with the group
  • ! Special: Nightingale is Injured
  • ! Flag Check: Massacred
Weird Glow
  • They stop at a fork, unsure of which way to go. Rook points to Zeke’s bag, where something is glowing from within. He removes it to discover the strange Goblet Lakshmi gave him.
  • The chalice is glowing powerfully, and Zeke believes it is leading to Justice. Shayliss disagrees, and ignores its directions.
What Will You Do Now?
  • Ezra and Brea finally take their leave of the party. They explain that the Anointed need to know what happened to Zafir, and they need to help stop Charon.
  • They promise that the Anointed won’t be sent to hunt Nightingale.
  • She wants to know if they think Charon is real. They confirm that he is, but that there are other dangers. The rest of the Council of Abhorrence are still free.
  • ! Special: Ezra and Brea leave the party
What’s Another Monster
  • Shayliss is horrified at the idea of helping it escape, furious at the damage they’ve already done. In her mind, if they help then any harm it causes will be their fault.
  • Rook agrees, but for more practical reasons, arguing they can find their own way to Justice faster than escorting the coffin to the surface first. In the end, the party calls a vote.
  • ! Decision: Help the Coffin escape the Eerie, or leave it to find its own way out.
What’s Wrong With Her
  • Abigail wants to know where the rest of the party will go. Nightingale says that she’ll absolutely be part of the group that goes to replace the Aegis stone. She refuses any suggestion that she should go anywhere else, or stay behind.
  • The Maluma manifests for her alone, surprisingly polite. After Shayliss notices Nightingale’s distress, it appears for everyone. The guards react, but they’re powerless to stop it just like the rest of them.
  • The Maluma admits that it was wrong about Nightingale’s weakness and incompetence. It admits that she’s resisted longer than any host it ever had. It says that it has no ultimate loyalty to Charon, and served him because he promised a body.
  • It proposes that Nightingale could provide it the same thing: if they give it a body, it will leave Nightingale voluntarily. In the process it confirms the truth of the Anointed’s story, about Charon’s imprisonment in the Suspended Tomb. In exchange for a body, it can also provide Nightingale the location of the last Pontifex piece.
  • Nightingale agrees instantly, prompting shock and horror from the rest of the group. She breaks down in front of them, confessing how difficult it has been to hold out for so long, how the Maluma has been wearing down on her sanity.
  • The promise struck, the Maluma admits that the last piece of the pontifex was what it was looking for when they first met: it is stored beneath the White Spires, in the keeping of Vault Lord Hogrifar.
  • The Maluma agrees to stop trying to take Nightingale’s body in the meantime, while she’s working to honor the bargain. If she ever defies it, it will turn on her again.
  • ! Flag Check: A New Owner
Who Are You?
  • Effie Grand appears in the throne room. After initially being dismissed, Zeke insists that she’s the perfect person for the job. They’re already going to the passage, and her ship takes it all the time.
  • Tyrial asks what she wants in payment, and she takes her card back from Zeke, showing off the ship. If she succeeds, she wants an entire airship as payment.
  • Considering how desperate they are, and how unlikely success appears, Tyrial agrees.
  • Tyrial and Abigail say their farewells.
